Finding balance within your heart (Valentines Day special)

February is a month that is dedicated to heart health.

This is a month where the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation raises millions of dollars towards raising awareness to one of the leading causes of death in Canada: cardiovascular disease. If you want  to see some stats about how serious Cardiovascular Disease is, and how much it affects Canadians, read this article

But I wanted this post to be different.

I was thinking of posting a really yummy dessert/snack such as my Healthy Hedgehogs, or foods that are red to represent the classic colour of Valentines Day (click here for my borscht recipe!), but I wanted to go a different route, and go against the grain...

That's when I started writing this post.

This special Valentines Day post is all about love, and finding balance within your heart.

This is the part where I start talking about hippie dippy sh**

You see, there are things called chakras, and you have 7 of them. The word chakra means "wheel of light"; a vortex of vibration, light and energy. The chakras are located in the astral (light/energy) body. The chakras are a network through the body, mind, and spirit that interact as one wholistic system.

So now that I've explained some general knowledge about chakras, lets bring our focus to the heart chakra.

The heart chakra is located at the center of the chest, right above our physical heart. It's colour is green.  The organs involved directly to the heart chakra are the heart, circulatory system, ribs, breasts, thymus gland, lungs, shoulders, arms, hands, & diaphragm.

Signs that you have an open heart: Strong ability to love, are joyous, compassionate, and have that "inner peace" we all strive for.

Signs that you may have a closed heart: Loneliness, unable to protect one’s self emotionally, emotionally weak, feeling of betrayal, the inability to forgive, and feeling angry, bitter, or jealous.

Ways to balance and open our heart chakra:

• Listen to your heart, and follow what you feel to be the truth.

• Learn to let go. The pain that we have experienced in our lives does not just "go away" as we age. We need to release this negative energy to be able to move forwards. If we neglect to release these negative energies, the emotional damage that we experienced as a child carry with us and keeps us living in the past.

• Self love! Learn to love yourself. We cannot fully love others, until we fully love ourselves.

"You yourself, deserve your love and affection as much as anybody in the entire universe" -Buddha

• Eat green foods!! Since the colour of the heart chakra is green, it makes sense that green foods to help balance the heart! Cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, leafy greens containing chlorophyll, and plant compounds like phytoestrogens and phytosterols such as sprouts help to bring balance and open the heart chakra. Really, anything green will help (NOT green food colouring..)

Eating a fresh green salad a day will give you a good dose of
MANY vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will help open your heart chakra.
Make it more appealing by making a flavour packed dressing
such as my Raspberry Vinaigrette

• Give love. Love others unconditionally and unselfishly. When we do this, we make others happy, which in turn, creates an abundance of joy and gratitude.

• Accept who you are, and what you're doing in life. It's mentally exhausting living the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" life. I find myself struggling with this every so often, but I just remind myself that I'm beautiful, smart, and a kick-ass lady who deserves the best life imaginable, and that only I can create this life for myself. That usually gets me off my pouty ass.

• Get outside!! Remember good ole Mother Nature? She's green too! Get out in nature and ground yourself. Play in the grass (or lay a picnic blanket down if you're allergic to grass like me), go for a walk, or play on the swings at your nearest park.

When we become conscious of love, self-love, compassion, and forgiveness, our heart chakra opens. This changes our consciousness about health, healing and the cause of illness. Dis-ease has a spiritual beginning not a physical –it starts from toxic emotional stresses (about 90% of illness is stress induced).

"Kind words can be short, and easy to speak. But their echoes are truly endless." -Mother Teresa

If you believe in energies and chakras, that's great. Hopefully you liked reading this.

If you don't, that's cool and groovy too! If you don't believe in chakras, still following a life guided by love is a pretty good idea in my opinion.
