Sugar Free Lemonade with Spirulina

Is winter time the best time to publish a lemonade recipe?

Probably not. Probably should have waited for summer time. But does life wait until summer to hand you lemons? No! Life hands you lemons 365 days a year so that means you should make some lemonade at any time you want!

I added Organika's Spirulina to this lemonade to make it a great addition to my elimination diet and to also add a little pep in my step as spirulina is excellent for cleansing and increasing energy.

Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria that grows in both salt and fresh water, and is often referred to as blue-green algae. Some of the health benefits of spirulina include:

·Protecting you DNA from oxidative damage. There's a component in spirulina called phycocyanin, which gives spirulina its blue-green colour. Phycocyanin can inhibit inflammatory signaling, and provides impressive anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
· High in protein
· Can reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol.
· Has antioxidants for reducing lipid peroxidation, which is oxidation of fatty structures in the body. There was a study conducted on 37 individuals with type II diabetes taking 8g of spirulina daily that significantly reduced oxidative damage while boosting antioxidant enzymes in the blood.
· Can reduce high blood pressure
· Strengthens the immune system
· Boosts energy levels

I've been putting spirulina in my water everyday for the past 10 days, and honestly I've felt great. Since I'm doing my elimination diet, I'm avoiding caffeine so this has been great in place of my daily black coffee for increased mental focus and physical energy!

Don't worry if you don't have spirulina on hand.. This lemonade recipe will still work without it!
I highly recommend you try spirulina however, as it's a great addition to your diet!
